"Cooking Capsules" Utility Wins Android Developer's Challenge
A Glimpse into the Near Future of Mobile Content
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 14, 2008 – “Cooking Capsules”, a mobile cooking utility, was among the winners of the Android Developer's Challenge, chosen by a panel of judges from The Open Handset Alliance (O.H.A.). The Challenge was designed by Google to encourage developers to build the first mobile applications for the forthcoming "Gphones", various models of phones from Alliance members such as LG, Motorola and Samsung which are being designed to run Google's Android Operating System.
Cooking Capsules "encapsulates" the process of cooking into three steps, "Watch", "Shop", and "Make", says Mary Ann Cotter, who founded Smart Capsules, the company that makes the utility. The mobile user chooses a dish, watches a short cooking show, uses the built-in shopping list features to collect the ingredients, and then checks off each recipe step as they prepare it. Other features include GPS maps to the nearest market and the ability to send shopping lists and recipes
to friends.
Cooking Capsules and the other 49 winning teams of the Challenge have each been granted $25,000 for further development and are qualified to enter a second round, wherein ten of the teams are slated to win $100,000 and another ten will win $275,000.
"I almost had a heart attack when I recieved word from Google that the panel had chosen us. I knew we had a strong chance, but this level of validation is amazing. I called my Challenge partner, Muthu Ramadoss, in India in the middle of the night and he said, 'I told you we'd win!'" Everyone who has been a part of the birth of the Cooking Capsules utility is excited about the future of Android, and honored that the Open Handset Alliance has invested in our vision by providing us with this opportunity," says Cotter.
"Wherever we place in the second phase of the Challenge, Cooking Capsules will be among the first utilities available for Android, and will be part of the historical industry shift spearheaded by the Open Handset Alliance. As a result of this shift, the consumer will have a lot more options soon, and I'm thrilled our streamlined approach to cooking will be one of them. It's a win-win."
Google received 1,788 Android application submissions from around the world by the midnight deadline on May 14th. The 50 winners represent a broad range of offerings including location-based video games, social networking utilities, a bar code scanner, and personal organizational tools.
Android will run on a variety of handsets through most major service providers as early as this year. Cooking Capsules is designed expressly for touch screen interfaces and is projecting a launch in the first quarter of 2009, when a new crop of smartphones start hitting the market.
"Whenever I am trying to figure out what to eat," Ms. Cotter adds, "I wish I had a Cooking Capsule. The truth is, I really can't wait to use it myself."
